FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What is the difference between a treatment table and a massage table?

Treatment tables are intended to give patients exams whereas massage tables are intended to provide maximum comfort and lumbar support during massage or spa treatments. There are many different types of treatment tables like taping and sports treatment tables, pediatric treatment tables, bariatric treatment tables, and more. They often offer less support and also come with more options to adjust the backrest and footrest so the practitioner can properly examine the patient.

Treatment tables can also be adjusted in height, making it easier for medical personnel to examine the patient. Massage tables do not always have height adjustability. Massage tables also include inserts for headrests and armrests. An exam table does not have these features because the experience isn't based on relaxation. An exam or treatment table has to allow patients a full range of mobility so the practitioner can provide them with adequate care.

What is the difference between a tilt table and a hi-lo table?

In most instances, a standard Hi-lo table offers more adjustable features than standard tilt tables although it is fairly common to see both hi-lo and tilt features in a single table. Optional features include adjustable footrests, headrests, and backrests that can be moved to fully examine a patient without causing any discomfort. In every case, and hence the name, the height is adjustable on a hi-lo table. A simple tilt table will remain straight but can be tilted back and forth by moving the whole table at once rather than in sections. A tilt treatment table is commonly used for specific treatments like treating a patient who has fainted or is suffering from ongoing lightheadedness or dizziness. It is not used for standard medical exams.

Are all exam tables stationary?

For the most part - yes, exam tables are generally stationary rather than portable. They have some adjustability to them but they are not portable. They are usually substantial in build and size to ensure maximum safety for patients who are typically evaluated in a hospital or clinic. You can turn to a portable massage table if you prefer to have something that can be easily moved around but it may not have the same strength as a stationary table will.

What is the average maximum weight capacity for standard exam tables? Bariatric tables? Pediatric tables?

Standard exam tables can usually hold up to 850 pounds. Bariatric treatment tables are designed to accommodate a heavier working load. Depending on the bariatric table you choose, the weight capacity can range anywhere from 600 to 1,000 pounds. An infant or newborn pediatric treatment table is often combined with a scale to accommodate children up to 40 pounds. For older children, most facilities use standard-sized exam tables. Many healthcare facilities specializing in children's care, however, may choose pediatric tables designed with pictures and colors to help put their young patients at ease during their visit.

How long are treatment tables, on average?

Average treatment tables are typically 57" long and can be increased to 72" long with an adjustable extension on the end of the bed. There are different types of exam tables to choose from so you may choose one that is either longer or shorter. Most tables can be adjusted to accommodate patients of all different heights and weights.

What are recovery couches used for?

Recovery couches and benches are often seen in treatment facilities like school or workplace nurse's offices, athletic training rooms, and even sometimes in massage facilities as added seating, a place to recover or rest, or a place to offer light therapeutic services. Some units have storage underneath for towels, linens, and supplies or offer a two-piece design to adjust the height of the head or feet when necessary. Most recovery benches are upholstered with thick padding and easy-to-clean fabrics in an array of colors.
