FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
What is massage oil?
Oil is a common lubricant used in massage treatments that require a great deal of glide. These oils can be derived from seeds, nuts, plants and grain. Because of its thin consistency and slow absorption rate, this lubricant maximizes workability and pairs perfectly with longer treatments. To create a custom experience for your clients, mix with the essential oil of your choice.
When should I choose massage oil rather than lotion, cream, or gel?
How do I remove oil stains?
Massage table linens are regularly doused with oils and lotions. Simply tossing them into the wash with other linens won’t be adequate...some sort of degreaser must be used. Experts suggest soaking sheets in dish soap or a citrus-based degreaser prior to laundering to successfully remove oil and lotion stains. Follow this step with a thorough wash in massage linen detergent. For best results, clean all linens within 24 hours of use.
Are massage oils messy?
The short answer is ‘yes.’ But like anything else, with proper preparation, you can minimize the mess and still use this highly regarded lubricant. Wearing a massage holster with refillable pump bottles brings the product closer to both you and your client and minimizes dripping. Remember...less is more. A small amount of oil goes a long way; using a small refillable pump bottle will let you control the amount of product you dispense. Simply spread the oil in your hands rather than directly to the client’s skin to avoid overuse. Have older towels nearby in case of a spill or overpour. And lastly be prepared to provide your client with either cloths or towels to further clean up after the service. A conveniently placed hamper or trash can will ensure the proper disposal of any messy materials.

GUIDE TO THE BEST MASSAGE OILS
The Art of Massage Therapy
Few things in life combine both pleasure and therapeutic benefits like an aromatic body oil massage. It provides deep relaxation, better circulation, stress reduction, and improved sleep cycles. A hot oil massage also relieves tight muscles, soothes joint pain, reinforces your nervous system, and promotes good posture.
Because massage oil has a longer glide than lotions or creams and dissolves into the skin at a slower rate, oils are most often chosen when the modality requires more working time with less frequent application. Common modalities include Swedish massage, hot stone massage, reflexology, and any other style that involves long, gliding strokes. Aromatherapy massage typically utilizes a carrier oil that serves as the base to create a variety of custom aromatic experiences by simply adding the essential oil (or oils) of your choice.
COMMON TYPES OF MASSAGE OIL & THEIR BENEFITS
There is a vast selection of massage oils on the market with a range of features including scented and unscented formulas, added essential vitamins proven to support skin health, and other unique variations that help to set each product apart. But, regardless of which you choose, the best massage oils will possess the following qualities:
- Low density and viscosity
- Absorbency and perfect moisture level
- Slow drying properties
- Pleasant odor
- No side effects
Coconut oil offers long-lasting skin moisturizing, helps repair the skin barrier providing anti-aging and antioxidant effects, and blends well with essential oils for ultimate customization. Good choice for psoriasis sufferers.
Grapeseed oil contains a powerful mix of phytochemicals, antioxidants, and antimicrobials that work together to protect the skin from premature aging, UV damage, and a number of topical pathogens. With little to no scent, it also makes a great carrier oil.
A perfect all-around massage oil, Jojoba oil is actually a wax extracted from the seeds of the jojoba plant. It offers antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, and anti-aging properties as well as a clean, non-greasy finish.
Sweet Almond Oil
A long-standing favorite of therapists, sweet almond oil offers superior workability and a long glide time without being overly heavy. The naturally occurring antiinflammatory properties make it a good choice to relieve rashes and skin irritation. Gentle enough to use on children.
CBD oil is believed to offer a multitude of overall health and wellness benefits including alleviation of tension and stress, chronic pain relief, improved skin appearance, and mood enhancement. Many CBD massage oils contain analgesics to maximize pain relief.
Rich in omega-9 and omega-6 fatty acids, olive oil reduces dry skin, muscle spasms, joint inflammation, and pain; it is also believed to promote relaxation and ease tension.
A viscous oil usually mixed with lighter oils for the purpose of massage, avocado oil is rich in nutrients with known rejuvenating anti-aging properties offering wrinkle and stretchmark reduction.
Although the shelf life of sunflower oil is shorter than others, it promotes a healthy glow by enhancing the skin's texture with its exceptional moisturizing properties.
