FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What is a hot stone massage?

Traditional hot stone massage uses a combination of warmed stones, massage oil, and massage technique to promote relaxation, improve circulation, and relieve muscle tension and pain. While many hot stones are made from basalt, CoreStones are carved from smooth soapstone into shapes to enhance various massage techniques. Used as an extension of the massage therapist’s hands, soapstone massage stones are thought to be some of the most versatile and client-pleasing stones on the market. Heated CoreStones will enhance facial treatments, pedicures, manicures and full body massage.

To use CoreStones for hot stone massage:

  • Heat CoreStones in a portable stone warmer or hot towel cabinet to a temperature of 110 to 120 degrees; Begin by massaging your client with your hands to assess the tissue;
  • Address knots and muscle restrictions first by using the broad side of the stones to add deep penetrating heat to relax the muscles and the end of the stone to aid in deep tissue release;
  • Use the soothing heat of the stone as an extension of your hand to complete the massage.
  • Although CoreStones are smooth by design, add a small amount of massage oil to your client’s skin if added glide when necessary.

What is a fascia massage?

Fascia massage, also known as myofascial release or fascial release therapy, is the practice of improving tissue flexibility and joint mobility by elongating the connective tissue between muscles, within muscle fibers, and around organs called the fascia. This deep-tissue massage technique can break down adhesions between the tissues, eases muscle tension, relieves pain, and improves posture, flexibility and overall mobility.

CoreStones are highly effective myofascial release tools as they act as an extension of the therapist’s hands to access deeper tissue more effectively than fingers and thumbs alone.

How do I heat CoreStone massage stones?

CoreStones can be heated in a water bath, a stone heater or hot towel cabinet to a temperature between 110 - 120 degrees. If a stone cannot be held in an uncovered hand, it is too hot! To avoid uneven temperatures, using a microwave or slow cooker is not recommended.

How do CoreStones work?

CoreStones massage therapy stones are carved from soapstone, a naturally efficient thermal conductor, and shaped to allow massage therapists the ability to release muscle tension and elongate the fascia without causing damage to the tissue. The stone’s unique cylinder design is both an ideal myofascial release tool when held the long way and a trigger point tool when turned on end. The diameter of the stone, however, is broader than a human thumb and will allow clients to tolerate more pressure with less pain when working on knots or restricted areas.

Why is soapstone effective for massage?

Soapstone’s unique properties are perfect for various salon treatments and massage modalities including deep tissue massage, myofascial release, hot stone massage therapy, facial treatments, manicures and pedicures, and traditional full body massage. Because of its physical, spiritual energy, and healing properties, CoreStones proudly uses soapstone as the material of choice for CoreStones Professional Massage Therapy Stone Sets, OmniStone Massage Stones, ReflexStone Massage Stones, and more.

How do you clean Corestone massage stones after a treatment?

CoreStones massage stones can be cleaned with soap and water, with an all-purpose cleaner, or with a disinfectant like PureGreen 24. According to the experts at CoreStones, the preferred method is to lay your stones on a towel and spray with an all-purpose cleaner or disinfectant. Wipe them down with a towel and place them back into the warmer for future treatments. If deeper cleaning is necessary or desired, CoreStones massage therapy stones can be cleaned in a dishwasher, taking care to space them properly to avoid possible chips from bumping into one another.

How do you give a cold stone massage?

Like ice therapy, cold stone massage therapy is highly effective for reducing inflammation, treating acute injuries like sprains and strains, alleviating headaches and sinus pain, and providing relief after strenuous exercise. Cold massage therapy works by initially constricting the blood vessels; after removing the cold stones, the body begins to warm and vessels widen allowing fresh oxygen and blood to circulate.

To achieve the dynamic between warmth and cold, it is important to warm up your client with a gentle stone-free massage. After chilling CoreStones massage stones in an ice bucket, freezer, or bowl of ice water to an ideal temperature between 25°-64° Fahrenheit, apply to the affected area(s). Unlike hot stone therapy, it is important to hold the stone in place for a few seconds and move slowly to allow the body to register the cold sensation. Allow the body to internally heat itself for long-lasting relief as the contrast in temperatures will create a healing balance that reduces both inflammation and pain.
