Essential Oils & Blends
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
What are essential oils?
Technically, essential oils are a natural oil typically obtained by distillation and having the characteristic fragrance of the plant or other source from which it is extracted. For many centuries, the aromatic oils from plants, leaves and flowers have been known to possess healing qualities used in religious ceremonies and spiritual rituals as well as for medicinal purposes. Ancient civilizations also used the oils in the earliest forms of perfumes and cosmetics. Today, essential oils remain an important part of homeopathic therapies and aromatherapy including massage.
How do I use essential oils?
Essential oils can be used topically on the skin either in pure form or in a carrier oil. They can also be used aromatically when diffused or taken internally in food or beverages. To use in an aromatherapy massage, simply mix a few drops of the chosen aromatic in the massage oil, cream or lotion of your choice. Many therapists choose to diffuse the same essential oil during the treatment to add to the ambiance.
PLEASE NOTE: No essential oil should be used without first consulting the manufacturer’s instructions as not all oils can be safely used in all three ways.
Do essential oils expire?
Yes. Although essential oils do not become rancid, they will change properties over time and possibly deteriorate and lose effectiveness. It is recommended to discard expired essential oils. Proper storage, however, will ensure a complete shelf life.
What is aromatherapy massage?
Aromatherapy massage incorporates a mix of carrier lubricant infused with either a single note oil or a pre-mixed essential oil blend in a traditional Swedish massage or other type of relaxation massage technique. Different essential oils and blends can be used to achieve a variety of effects including relaxation, stress release, anti-anxiety, a general sense of well-being or healing. During an aromatherapy massage, the client will inhale these essential oil molecules or absorb them through the skin.
