FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
How does kinesiology tape work?
An injury to a joint, muscle, or bone causes the body to respond with a rush of blood and other bodily fluids causing inflammation. When applied correctly, kinesiology tape is thought to reduce the discomfort associated with swelling by lifting the skin away from the bone or muscle providing more room for blood and lymphatic vessels to carry necessary healing nutrients to the injury. Other benefits of kinesiology tape include support to fragile joints or strained muscles without restricting range of motion, helps to prevent muscle cramps, and aids in faster recovery.
What is kinesiology tape?
Kinesiology tape is a form of elastic or athletic tape used to support joints and muscles. A modern-day advancement in sports medicine, these therapeutic elastic wraps are made of a stretchy, cloth-like material and when applied correctly, are thought to reduce pain and aid in the healing of common injuries like sprains, tendonitis and muscle strains without limiting range of motion.
How do I use kinesiology tape?
Before using kinesiology therapeutic tape, always consult your physical therapist or medical professional to ensure proper application and minimize further injury associated with improper taping. Your doctor will determine which pattern - X, Y, I or fan - and how much ‘stretch’ is necessary to best support your injury.
For best results, apply tape to clean, dry skin free of lotion or oils. Be sure that the area of application is free of thick hair to avoid adherence problems. Cut the end of the tape into a semi-circle as rounded edges are less likely to get caught up in clothing or other surfaces. To remove the backing of the tape, gently tear the paper backing by twisting the tape. Typically you will start by removing about 2 inches of the paper backing near one of the ends. After firmly adhering the first few inches, you will remove the remaining backing to apply as directed by your physician. After the tape is fully applied, rub it vigorously to ensure full adhesion.
How do I remove kinesiology tape?
To remove kinesiology tape that hasn’t loosened on its own, gently pull on one end while compressing the skin underneath and remove with a slow, smooth motion to avoid damaging the skin. If the tape is stubborn, try rubbing a little oil on the strip.
Is kinesiology tape waterproof?
Most kinesiology tape is made of a unique blend of nylon, cotton and skin-friendly adhesive and will remain in place up to five days. The strips are water resistant and should stay in place through showers or intense workouts.
