Facial Care

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What products are used in a facial?

A facial is a multi-step skin treatment that cleanses, exfoliates and nourishes the skin. To achieve maximum hydration and a clear complexion, estheticians typically employ many techniques and products over the course of one treatment. The most common facial, the European Facial, consists of multiple steps and may include the following products:

Steam - Applied with a facial treatment system, steam softens the skin and allows for easier extraction of blackheads and whiteheads.

Extraction - When necessary, estheticians will often use a special tool to extract blackheads and whiteheads.

Facial Massage Lotions, Oils or Creams - For relaxation as well as pore and muscle stimulation, the esthetician will gently massage your face using a massage oil, lotion, or cream best suited to the client’s skin type.

Facial Masks - The next step is often the application of a facial mask chosen specifically with the treatment result in mind. Some masks are used for anti-aging purposes others for ultimate hydration.

Toners, Moisturizers, Sunscreens and More - Other products used in facial treatments include a variety of skin enhancers and hydrators. Scrubs, exfoliators, moisturizers and toners are chosen based on the treatment goal and the client’s skin type.

What do you need to start a facial business?

Establishing a business requires licensing and certification, insurance, and other general items specific to your state. Be sure to consult your state and local regulations for more information.

To offer facial treatments, certain products and services are necessary while others will add value as you grow. Beginning this journey with a treatment menu and service plan will help you decide which facial products are essential to your start-up. Generally, you will require a comfortable table and linens, a facial steaming system, a variety of facial massage and skin products like oils, lotions, creams, exfoliators, scrubs, sunscreens, masks and scrubs as well as extraction tools. In addition to facial supplies used on your clients, you will also need brushes, mixing bowls, proper lighting, storage or a rolling cart, personal protective equipment such as gloves and masks, as well as disinfectants and cleaners. Optional spa supplies such as bottle warmers, towel and tool sterilizers, and rolling stools may also prove convenient.

What are the different facial treatments?

Aimed at different end results and skin types, there are almost as many types of facials as there are people! Some of the most common facial treatments are:

  • European Facial
  • Lymphatic Massage Facial
  • Galvanic Facial
  • LED Light Therapy
  • Microdermabrasion Therapy
  • Anti-Aging Treatment
  • Acupuncture Facial
  • Brightening Facial
  • Hydrating Facial
  • Chemical Peel
  • Dermaplaning
  • Microneedling
  • Aromatherapy Facial
  • Oxygen Facial
