Oils, Creams & Lotions
Massage Oil, Cream, Lotion and Gel FAQ:
What are massage oils?
Generally speaking, a massage oil is used in treatments which need a great deal of glide. Massage oils can be derived from seeds, nuts, plants and grain. These massage oils can be used singly or in some cases they are combined to maximize the workability for a specific treatment. Massage oil is thinner than most other massage lubricants, Lotion or Cream and takes a while to absorb into the skin. They have a tendency to cause challenges with staining of massage sheets, however Fractionated Coconut massage oil is a great oil with lesser staining issue. Additionally there are massage detergents on the market containing ingredients specifically addressing the botanicals that can often be deposited on the fibers of massage sheets.
What are massage cream?
A massage cream is generally used when you want to a richer product that provide a nice glide, but will also allow for grip when needed once worked into the skin. Massage cream has a tendency to have a longer workability, yet absorbs well into the skin, leaving it feel soft and supple. Massage Cream or Creme is also more laundry friendly, leaving less laundering concerns for the massage therapist. Some massage creams are pumpable, but many are not due to the viscosity of the product. These too are made of oils and other ingredients that are beneficial to the skin.
What are massage lotions?
Massage lotions are used when you would like the medium to reduce friction, but also absorb quickly. These are pumpable and are widely used across many of the more common modalities. Usually comprised of combinations of oils, the largest ingredient is usually water. This makes a massage lotion a good choice if massage laundry staining is a concern. Massage lotions provide a nice glide, but also absorb enough to provide the ability to perform deep tissue work as well.
What are massage gels?
A Massage Gel is a product that can give you the glide of an oil, but without the residue remaining on the skin. This is a very light alternative to other massage lubricants as the weight is less, as is the feel on the skin. These are generally used in relaxations type massages, but can be formulated to provide grip when needed. One of the many advantages therapists have reported when using massage gels is the economy of use. It takes less massage gel to accomplish the same effect as when using an massage oil. Using less can mean saving product and money. Massage Gels are generally water dispersible, and are predominantly laundry friendly.
