Factors to Consider When Buying a Percussion Massager

The percussion massage tool market has grown exponentially in the last few years. With so many options available, it may seem like a daunting task to determine how to successfully compare and ultimately decide which massage gun is right for you. Focusing on the following factors for each unit you are considering will help you make the best choice for your specific needs.
To assist you in making an educated decision, we've incorporated these crucial components of a percussion massager in our convenient Buyer's Guide.
Power
Power of a percussion massager is defined by a combination of speed, amplitude and torque. Although not every manufacturer lists all three of these considerations in their product specifications, the most reliable indicator of power is the range of speed.
Speed
Some like it gentle and some like more aggressive strokes - A gun with variable speeds will allow you to customize the massage according to your comfort level. Speed is measured in RPM or the number of times the massage head(s) strike per minute.
Amplitude
This refers to how deep the massage head moves and accounts for the difference between a light and deep massage. Amplitude is typically measured in millimeters (mm).
Torque
In reference to massage guns, ‘torque’ is usually measured in pounds, and equals the amount of pressure you can apply to the device before the motor stalls. Not all manufacturers list this measurement in the product specifications.
Portability
A massage gun should be convenient to transport and light enough to use for the time necessary to be effective. For self-massage, units weighing under 3 lbs are easiest to use.
Functionality
Ergonomic design and ease of use should be a major consideration when purchasing a massage gun. Some massage guns offer long reach handles while others fit in the palm of your hand. Depending on how you are most likely to use the massager will dictate the style of massager you choose. Available accessories or inclusions to consider include multiple interchangeable massage heads, cordless power, carry cases, replacement or back-up batteries and stands. Also consider the noise level of your chosen device as some are much more quiet than others.
Battery Life
Most cordless percussion massagers have an average battery life of 60 to 180 minutes. Some of the more powerful massagers have a shorter battery life when run at full speed continuously making availability of backup batteries or optional corded functionality appealing.
Price
As with any major purchase, price point plays a large role in the decision making process. Although many percussion massagers look similar, the functionality, design, and technology in each can vary greatly - not only from brand to brand but from product to product within each brand. Consideration of the manufacturer’s dedication to advancement and willingness to back their products should also be a consideration.
